Why are the mirrors closed?
Mirrors for the Slavic peoples have always beensomething like a boundary between earthly life and the other world. Most of all, the tradition is to cover or even take out mirrors and everything that can be seen from the reflection, from a house where someone died. In this article we will try to understand why the mirrors are closed, and in what cases it is customary to do so.
Different reasons for closing mirrors
- In ancient times it was considered appropriate to remove or cover the mirrors in case of storms, thunderstorms or on Good Friday after midnight.
- Traditions of the Slavs say that it is undesirable to look at your reflection to pregnant women and women who have just given birth.
- It is not customary to bring a child under the age of 1 to the mirror. He may get scared, sleep badly or start talking late.
- Nowadays it is often said that one should not eat in front of a mirror, so as not to eat their beauty. It is believed that the mirror can draw in itself all the beauty, depriving her of the person.
Why do they close the mirrors when the deceased is in the house?
It is believed that if someone in the house is dead, then for nowhis soul is still on the Earth, the passage to another world is open. And the mirror serves as a kind of door there. Therefore, it is customary to close it. Also people from antiquity believe that the soul of the deceased may appear in the mirror and frighten relatives. The looking-glass was always something mystical. According to various interpretations it is believed that the soul of the deceased may be frightened of self reflection or stuck forever in the mirror. Even more terrifying is the belief that a living person can see the deceased in the mirror and die himself immediately.
Nevertheless, there are no church prescriptionsto close and take out mirrors in case of death of the tenant of the apartment. The consciousness of modern man considers this to be an absurd and ridiculous prejudice. In fact, curtain mirrors are a simple superstition that does not affect either the living or the dead. Although many are inclined to think so, all the mirrors are curtained everything, because in such a terrible moment everyone is afraid to look into the reflection of the room and objects that are in it.
