What is autonomy?
In Russian there are many foreign words. One of these is the word "autonomy", which has Greek roots. What is autonomy, what are the spheres of use of this word?
In translation from Greek, "atutos" is itself,"Nomos" is a law, independence. Autonomy means independence, a free choice of solutions and ways of acting. This word is used in various spheres of society, acquiring a somewhat different connotation of meaning. But in general it is always independence.
Examples of the use of the word "autonomy"
- First of all, this is a political term. Autonomy is an independent decision-making by the authorities of a territory that is part of the state, as well as this right to solve local issues within the competence of municipal authorities independently. This right should be enshrined in the Constitution of the state. Example: "Subjects of the Russian Federation have autonomy in resolving issues related to the privatization of land under the jurisdiction of this entity".
- Use this word also in those cases whenwe mean the independence of an institution or enterprise in solving internal problems. A historical fact is known, as in the nineteenth century the right of autonomy was granted to universities by some emperors, while others were abolished. For example: "Autonomy gave the right to universities themselves to elect the rector, to accept teachers, to approve the curriculum of the university."
