What is a valley?
In the lessons of geography in the school we were told what a valley is. Today we will refresh your school knowledge, as well as give additional information on this topic.
What is the Valley: Definition
The valley is an elongated form of relief, elongatedcavity, which is formed as a result of soil erosion under the action of flowing water. River water gradually flushes the soil along the banks of the river - and a valley appears. Usually valleys are formed along the banks of reservoirs. Convict forms of the valley are ravines, gullies, gullies, which are formed by unstable water currents. Sometimes the appearance of the valley is due not to the action of flowing water, but to the features of the geological structure of the relief. An example is the California Valley in North America.
Types of valleys
Geologists distinguish between mountainous and lowland valleys. As is clear from the name, the former are formed in the mountains, and the latter - on the plains. Mountain valleys are characterized by great depth with a small width. They have uneven steep slopes. Plain valleys, on the contrary, are shallow and wide. They have gently sloping flat slopes. More about the plains you can read in the article What is the Plains.
The structure of the valley
Geologists distinguish the following elements of the valley:
- the bottom of the slopes - the place of joining the bottom and the slopes of the valley;
- brow - a place where the slopes of the valley connect with the surrounding terrain;
- terraces - small areas located above the bottom of the valley.
Slopes can be shallow or steep, highor low. In the young valleys, the bottom is not sufficiently isolated, the slopes often smoothly pass into the riverbank. Over time, each element becomes more pronounced.
Features of the valley
River valleys often connect with each other andform a complex ramified system of landscapes. The relief of the valleys is quite unstable and subject to changes due to river flows, which can change direction.
