Starbucks Receives Thank You Card with 630,000 Customer Signatures for Marriage
In a strong show of support for marriage equality, and a direct challenge to the right-wing attacks by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), more than 630,000 members of SumOfUs.org, MoveOn.org and Washington United for Marriage signed a massive “” card to Starbucks. The giant card was selected by SumOfUs.org membersand was delivered to the Starbucks HQ in Seattle, WA on Wednesday, April 4, 2012.
SumOfUs.org launched the “Thank Starbucks” campaign in the face of the NOM “Dump Starbucks” boycott. NOM called on the public to spread the message of anti-gay bias because Starbucks publicly supported gay marriage legislation that recently passed in Washington state. More than 20 times as many people have thanked Starbucks as have pledged to dump Starbucks.
“We’ve been stunned by the passionate response to ‘Thank Starbucks’ – our most viral campaign ever,” Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director for SumofUs.org said. “We’ve seen in our campaigns that consumers expect corporations to do right by their workers and by their community. We hope that this overwhelming show of support for Starbucks for supporting gay rights will inspire other corporations to keep making similar public statements.”
“We knew that people would stand with Starbucks for standing up for marriage equality, but this response is amazing. This kind of consumer support shows why so many Washington companies recognize that all loving, committed couples should have the freedom to marry,” said Zach Silk, Campaign Manager for Washington United for Marriage. Washington United for Marriage is a coalition of organizations, congregations, unions, and businesses working together to secure civil marriage for same-sex couples in Washington State.
