OMA introduced its first residential high-rise for New York
The company OMA announced the project of its first residential tower for New York. House 121 at 22nd East Street is located at the intersection of two districts: to the north-west of it are the bustling neighborhoods of Madison Square, to the south - relatively quiet and calm, and the area around Gramercy Park.
A duality is expressed in the facade: the “prismatic angle” of glass that attracts attention is contrasted with the other, more traditional, arrangement of windows. The corner element draws out the view from the inside of the building, in some places attracting the gaze to the sky, in others - to the streets below.
The building occupies an L-shaped section, one end facing the 22nd street, the other at the intersection of 23rd street from Lexington Avenue. The first level of the building is reserved for shops. Above the 12th floor, the frame is “recessed” so that the building does not stand out from the row of the houses closest to it.
“The design of the 133-apartment apartment building is subject to a dual context,” explained Shohei Shigematsu, head of the OMA New York office.“The narrowed windows echo the neighboring pre-war buildings, but smoothly move into the modern panoramic glazing closer to the center, creating a gradient from the historical to the modern.”
