A window sill is an important part of any window. In this article I will tell you how to install a window sill. You will find out what conditions you need to observe in order to install a window sill correctly, as this will also affect the climate in the room. I also note that there is not much difference between the installation of wooden and plastic windowsills, since the installation technology is used about the same. Well, let's get to it.
How to properly install a window sill
The window sill in the house is often subjected to variousEffects: temperature changes, ultraviolet rays of the sun, moisture, as well as mechanical loads. Of course, all these moments must be taken into account with the correct installation of the window sill. For the successful installation of the window sill, it is first necessary to make it correctly measured. Here it should be noted that the length of the finished window sill should be somewhat wider than the window itself in order for its edges to enter the wall. Well, the width of the window sill depends directly on the depth of the window opening. Here you need to take into account and the protrusion from the wall about 5 cm. It's just that the window, as it is planned in multi-storey buildings, has a heating battery, and it is located just under the windowsill. Therefore, if you make a window sill more than 5 cm, it will impede air convection, and in fact warm air should rise to the window unhindered, and also dry the surface of the double-glazed window to prevent condensation from falling out on the windows. Well, if such a need arose, then it is necessary to cut holes and equip them appropriately with ventilation grilles.
Installing window sills with your own hands
Before installation, you must first prepare a placefor the window sill. For installation to plastic windows under them there must be a special installation profile in which the window sill will rest against the wooden windows, then they have a special groove called a quarter. The distance from the bottom of the opening, where the window sill will lie, up to the window line should be larger than the thickness of the window sill by at least 2 cm. This space is necessary in order that it can then be poured with mounting foam. It is desirable to clean the wall of various construction debris and dust. Well, then, after these simple, but necessary manipulations, you need to try on the sill at the installation site and make the cuts if necessary. Installation of the window sill should be carried out on a previously prepared cement site, and also do not forget about waterproofing. Initially, the sill board is installed on wooden or plastic beacons exposed to the level, but with a slight bias towards the room, that is down, so that unimpeded drainage of moisture can occur if necessary. The slope is approximately 3-5 mm per 200 mm of the window sill width. Finally, the window sill itself must always be brought under the window, and in no case should it rest on it. This method is also suitable for how to install a plastic window sill.
We continue the installation
Now fix the window sill with the help of the mountingfoam. Do not forget that the foam greatly expands when used, so you can easily raise the window sill. To prevent this from happening, advance the temporary struts in the upper slope or put something heavy on top. Finally, for plastic and laminated window sills, you need to put plastic caps on the edges. If the window sill is made of chipboard, the plugs are put on the silicone to avoid moisture, and only then the protective film is removed. After that, after a certain time, it is possible to seal the joints of the window sill with the slopes and the window with the help of a special silicone sealant. Note that for a quality installation of window sills do not require any special tool, nor any serious skills and skills in the work - it is enough to have at least some repair experience. The only thing you might need is either a regular saw or an electric jigsaw - just to cut off the desired length for the sill.
So that there are no scratches on the surface of the windowsilland chipped, which can also appear in the place of sawing, you need to be careful, and for this, saw without much pressure on the sill. By the way, during the installation of the product often its upper plane is protected by a special film, which is not recommended to be removed before the completion of installation work. The ends of the windowsills after sawing would be well closed with special plugs, which can be bought separately. Usually end caps have standard sizes, so there should not be any problems with their installation, of course, if you install the standard window sill. But even if the stub is bigger - it's okay. In this case, it is easy to reduce with conventional scissors. In the lower plane of the window sill, there are usually special grooves that are made to facilitate the installation of the product in the window opening. Here, in fact, that's all. However, I have no doubt that you will succeed, because most often you just need to mount the finished product.
